Ellie Ranting: Rape Culture for Dummies (aka people who think rape is funny or that women aren't objectified)

fuzzybagels:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_culture

Rape culture is a term or concept used to describe a culture in whichrape and sexual violence are common and in which prevalentattitudesnorms, practices, and medianormalize, excuse, tolerate, or even condone sexual violence. Examples of behaviors commonly associated with rape culture include victim blamingsexual objectification, and trivializing rape. Rape culture has been used to model behaviour within social groups, including prison systems whereprison rape is common and conflict areas where war rape is used as psychological warfare. Entire countries have also been alleged to be rape cultures.[1][2][3] Although the concept of rape culture is a generally accepted theory in feminist academia, disagreement still exists over what defines a rape culture and whether a given society should be considered a rape culture.

The root cause of rape culture is generally agreed to be the “domination and objectification of women”.[13]

http://www.marshall.edu/wpmu/wcenter/sexual-assault/rape-culture/

Rape culture is perpetuated through the use of misogynistic language, the objectification of women’s bodies, and the glamorization of sexual violence, thereby creating a society that disregards women’s rights and safety.

Examples of Rape Culture:  (from the link above with some cissexist corrections by me)

  • Blaming the victim (“She asked for it!” “you know he wanted it”)
  • Trivializing sexual assault (“Boys will be boys!” “you’re his WIFE you have to”)
  • Sexually explicit jokes that trivialize rape
  • Tolerance/joking of sexual harassment
  • Inflating false rape report statistics
  • Publicly scrutinizing a victim’s dress, mental state, motives, and history
  • Gratuitous gendered violence in movies and television
  • Defining “manhood” as dominant and sexually aggressive
  • Defining “womanhood” as submissive and sexually passive
  • Pressure on men to have sex as much as possible aka “scoring”
  • Pressure on women to not appear “cold” by refusing sex
  • Public humiliation of victims of rape
  • Public humiliation of women who refuse to date you (can be anything from harassing them on public internet forums or walking around with a sandwich board with their photo)
  • Posting photos or videos of sexual acts with your partner as ‘revenge’
  • Perpetuating the myth that you owe someone sex for a gift or them taking you to dinner, etc
  • Assuming only promiscuous women get raped
  • Assuming that men don’t get raped or that only “weak” men get raped
  • Assuming women don’t rape or can’t rape
  • Acting like teenage boys who were sexually assaulted ‘wanted it’
  • Refusing to take rape accusations seriously
  • Teaching women to avoid getting raped instead of teaching people not to rape
  • Being cissexist and ignoring that trans* folk have an incredibly high rate of sexual assault
  • Being racist and ignoring that women of color have an incredibly high rate of sexual assault, especially Native American women
  • ignoring that sex workers experience a high level of sexual assault

http://www.rainn.org/statistics

97% of rapists will not spend any time in jail for their crime

only about 3% of rapes are ever convicted

http://rainn.org/get-information/statistics/frequency-of-sexual-assault

every 2 minutes someone is sexually assaulted

http://www.oneinfourusa.org/statistics.php

2/3rds of rapes are committed by someone the victim knew

http://www.ncdsv.org/images/sexualassaultstatistics.pdf

1 in 4 women will experience sexual violence in her lifetime

1 in 3 Native American women will experience sexual violence in her lifetime

1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18

tell me again why sexism isn’t a big deal

tell me again why racism isn’t a big deal

tell me again why feminism is going ‘too far’

tell me again that I deserve it

tell me again that my friends deserved it

tell me again that my anger is unjustified

tell me again that you think rape is funny

tell me again why you continue to perpetuate this harmful chunk of society even though you know better

I need feminism because women are taught that their value degenerates with their age and beauty.

Japanese Wisteria Tunnel

These photos were taken at the Kawachi Fuji Garden, about a four hour drive from Tokyo, but there are wisteria festivals all over Japan, including at the Kameido-Tenjin Shrine, where tourists in the Edo period often visited the famous wisteria; the Wake Wisteria Park, in Wake-cho, Okayama, and at Ashikaga Flower Park, which has three massive wisteria trellises that extend 3,280 feet squared. (Time Out Tokyo has a list of additional notable wisteria around the city worth visiting.)

Kay has been known to transform her body into water, however never in shadow. Additionally, she developed the talent to confuse the hearing of a combatant and she possesses the power to cause her foes to become deaf, but this power only lasts one day at a time. Kay has learned to absorb the damage from magnetism and redirect it against any assailant in sight and she has the power to squirt deadly radiation from her stinger toward a distant area. She likewise is able to copy any one power of her enemies and she can transform any dolphin into an animal. Kay can become immovable, but using this power draws a lot of attention. Terribly, Kay is deathly afraid of rhinoceroses.

Sarah possesses the power to take control of gravity and bend it to her will. She has mastered the ability to view distant locations with her mind, but never in bright light. Sarah developed the talent to force werewolves to cower in fear and she fights using a destructive beak made from wood. She also has been known to copy all powers of her combatants, however this power fades when she is knocked unconscious. Sarah wields a razor-sharp group of nails that can force enemies to obey her every command. Lamentably, Sarah becomes unable to see dwarves in the presence of diamond.O__O
